I enjoyed this Victorian story that has a wild and feisty Delia, who has a penchant for theft, able to pickpockets, and even swindle customers of their correct change. She has worked in the fabric shop with her father since she was 12-years-old and has known he has arranged marriage to a man she cannot stand. Running away to become a governess lands her with Charles Hayward and his daughters Emma and Alice. What is going on in this household that cannot retain a Governess for very long? The plot kept me captivated and the pages turning with entertaining dialog and a unique situation between Charles and Delia.
Since when can a shopkeeper's daughter just up and decide to become a governess without any training or especially, without any references? No one would hire her. And since when can a bolt of silk be bought for six pence? Even in Victorian England, six pence was only six pence, literally six pennies. I suggest this author read some history about Victorian society, and a couple or three novels by classic Victorian writers before rewriting this story. No matter how touching the romance or how hot the erotica, if the setting doesn't ring true, the plot doesn't work.
This was a delightfully fun read with a feisty young woman, a stern but kind alpha man, witty dialog, and a well written storyline. This was a fast paced page turner and I didn't put it down until I finished it.
I enjoyed this story a great deal. I Loved Delia and Charles. The story kept me captivated and I liked the mystery too.
Set in the Victorian times, this story tells about the adventure of Delia who is trying to avoid the marriage made by her father by accepting the post as governess to a gentleman-of-means. Delia's first encounter with her unknown employer is in the shop owed by her father where she deliberately short-changes the purchase. Delia then begins to cross-swords from the very beginning with Charles Hayward from the onset of her employment resulting all forms of discipline resulting from her dishonesty and disobedience.
Delia finds herself fleeing from her father and an unwanted betrothal to become a governess to a single father only to find herself in the home of a dominant man happy to take her to task for her mistakes. Falling in love never was in the plan, but fate and menacing threats push this unlikely yet meant for each other couple together. Charles has his secrets and his dark desires for an age play relationship, and Delia though naive finds herself a willing and eager participant. Sweet story, likable characters, good read.
I enjoyed this book and the relationship that grew between Charles and Delia. Delia was sweet and funny. But, I had a problem with Charles when I discovered he was a bigamist, was paying his 'wife' a monthly fee to keep her quiet and never said a word to Delia. She deserved better from him. It's just my opinion though, and I did have fun reading the book.
